The New Gallery
An artist-run contemporary art centre in Calgary’s Chinatown, with free exhibitions, public art and experimental programming.
The New Gallery is an artist-run centre for contemporary art at 208 Centre Street S in Calgary’s Chinatown. Established in 1975 as the Clouds & Water Gallery and Visual Production Society, the charitable centre supports social and political art practices and invites audiences into artist-run culture. Its programme spans Main Space exhibitions, the street-facing Billboard 208, Mainframe online projects and public events. Visit the official site for exhibition texts, artist information and new programming. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Wednesday–Saturday, noon–6 p.m.; the gallery is closed to the public during August. Opening receptions and other special events have their own hours. Coming up: Riel Starr’s Otipemisiwak Fantasy runs October 23–December 12, 2026, with an opening reception on October 23, 6:30–9 p.m. The exhibition considers contemporary Métis culture through an Indigiqueer and Two-Spirit perspective. Billboard 208 currently features Michelle Ku’s Lo Bak Go; Mainframe presents Solving a Problem, curated by Mark Bedford. Dates for these latter projects are not published, so check their official pages before planning a visit.
