Calgary for $0

A whole downtown day that costs nothing, built to work in January: a glass garden, 16 km of skywalks, the city’s best library and a skyline view at the end.

A free day in downtown Calgary that works in any weather. Go indoors through the +15 skywalks and Devonian Gardens, out along Stephen Avenue and through Chinatown, and finish on the river and up at the Crescent Heights lookout.

Calgary is expensive enough. This is a full day downtown without paying for a ticket, a museum or parking, and most of it is indoors, so it works at minus twenty as well as in July.

  1. Central Library

    East Village

Start somewhere warm and beautiful. Wander all the floors, find a window seat, and if you live here, get a library card: it is free.

  2. Stephen Avenue Walk

    Downtown

Calgary’s pedestrian main street, lined with sandstone buildings from the early 1900s. Walk it west and look up.

  3. Devonian Gardens

    CORE Shopping Centre, 4th floor

A free indoor garden under a glass roof, with thousands of plants, a koi pond and a living wall. The warmest green space in the city in February.

  4. The +15 skywalks

    Downtown

About 16 km of enclosed bridges, one floor up, linking a big part of downtown. Follow the +15 signs and cross the core without stepping outside.

  5. Chinatown and Sien Lok Park

    Chinatown

Walk Centre Street into Chinatown, then down to Sien Lok Park on the river. Budget a few dollars if a bakery gets you; that part is optional.

  6. Prince’s Island Park and the Peace Bridge

    Eau Claire

Back outside for the river: loop the island, then cross Santiago Calatrava’s red Peace Bridge to Sunnyside.

  7. Crescent Heights lookout

    Crescent Heights

End with the climb up the McHugh Bluff stairs to Crescent Road for the whole skyline at sunset. Still free.
